Title: Slowing down fast: Industrial growth

Issue: Downturn in industrial activity

Syllabus: General Studies-III - Indian Economy - Economic Development - Growth, Development, Poverty, Employment and Unemployment

Context

Industrial growth was just 0.1% in February posing policy challenges

Highlights

Industrial growth is measured by Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is slowing down in the recent months.

The eight core industries - Coal, Cement, Electricity, Crude Oil, Steel, Natural Gas, Refinery Products, Fertilizers constitute 40.27 % of weight in the IIP. The base year for IIP is 2011-12.

Manufacturing which has a weight of 78% in the index continues to be in negative growth and GDP growth was also slowest in the last six quarters. (6.6% for Q.E Dec 2018)

RBI and IMF lowered India’s growth expectations, indicating turnaround in economic growth poses challenges.

Retail inflation (measured by CPI) was also at five month high due to rise in food and fuel prices.

Monetary easing

Monetary easing (interest rate cut by RBI in two successive policy meetings) is easy solution to stimulate economic growth but may lead to inflation in long run.

Policymakers need to address the structural problems for economic slowdown like

  • NPAs in banks and the NBFC which is hurting credit markets.

  • Investments in sectors struggling with tight credit cycle.

Way forward

To boost the economic growth, monetary easing may help short-term gains, but reforms and structural changes is the need of hour for genuine economic growth.
